Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) test checks how the heart is functioning by measuring the electrical activity of the heart. With each heart beat, an electrical impulse (or wave) travels through your heart. This wave causes the muscle to squeeze and pump blood from the heart.

This test can show if your heart is beating at a normal rate and strength. It also helps show the size and position of your heart's chambers.

 

An abnormal ECG reading can be a sign of heart disease or damage.
